Many of our Art in Nature programs have focused on recording our observations of the natural world in journals. Now, you can create your own handmade journal to capture these moments of inspiration.
Join local artist Anna Amiradaki for a hands-on workshop on Coptic stitch book binding on Thursday, Oct. 8, from 6 to 8 pm in the Collis Gallery at the Barrington Public Library.
The event is free but registration is limited. The Barrington Land Conservation Trust is covering the cost of supplies, Anna is volunteering her time and expertise, and the Barrington Public Library is providing the space. A wonderful collaboration!
The Coptic stitch is one of the oldest binding structures in the world, used by monks to bind sacred texts. Its exposed spine is considered a mark of honest craft.
In this workshop, participants make a hand-sewn art journal from scratch — folding signatures, piercing paper, sewing each section with linen thread in a structure that holds without glue and lies completely flat when open. Everyone will leave with a finished journal and the knowledge to make another.
