Help Us Protect Your Land

A decision to protect a property is a personal one. It involves the financial and tax circumstances of the landowner, the land itself, and the owner’s planned use of the land. The Barrington Land Conservation Trust recognizes that every person’s situation and goals are different so it offers several methods for you to protect your land.

Every potential land donation is reviewed by the Board of Directors’s Acquisition and Planning Committee to determine its conservation value in connection with our current portfolio of properties and our long-term ability to preserve it. If you are interesting in exploring a land donation, email Executive Director Cindy Elder.

In addition to a standard donation of land, other types of donations can be considered:

Conservation Easement: A voluntary, legal agreement that permanently limits uses of the land in order to protect its conservation values.

Bargain-Purchase of Land: A land or conservation easement that is sold to a non-profit charitable or tax- exempt organization for less than its fair market value.

Bequest and Living Trust or Donation of a Remainder Interest: A donation of land that allows you to retain the right to live on or use the property during your lifetime.
