SUMMARY:250th History Walk: Hampden Meadows Greenbelt
DESCRIPTION:Kick off 2026 and the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence with a New Year’s Day History Walk on the Hampden Meadows Greenbelt on Thursday\, January 1\, at 1 pm. All ages are welcome. The event is free and open to the public\, regardless of where you live. \nREGISTER FOR THE WALK \nEach of our 2026 History Walks will present elements of Barrington’s history in connection with the location we are visiting. They are held in collaboration with Barrington 250. \nThe Greenbelt offers an opportunity to explore its significance to the Pokanoket people as well as Hampden Meadows’ role as a place of trade in the early days of settlement. \nOur walk will begin at the trailhead on Kent Street in Barrington\, across from the tennis courts. Kent Street is a short road that runs between New Meadow Road and Sowams Road.  \nWe’ll walk the main trail through the forest as far as Linden Road and return the same way. The entire walk is approximately 2 miles. You may park at the tennis courts on Kent St.  Dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear. We’ll keep moving at a moderate pace and be finished in about an hour. \nAbout Barrington 250 \nBarrington celebrates the 250th anniversary of American independence with festivities through July 2026 that invite neighbors and visitors of all ages to commemorate our town’s rich history in establishing and sustaining a democratic nation. Presented in collaboration with community partners\, programs will feature educational events\, civic engagement activities\, ceremonies and celebrations that culminate over the July 4th holiday weekend. SUMMARY:Discussion: Invasive Plant Species Legislation
DESCRIPTION:Burning Bush invading a New England woodland understory. Despite the ecological harm being caused by this plant\, it is still commonly sold and planted across RI. \nThe Barrington Pollinator Pathway\, an initiative of the Barrington Land Conservation Trust\, is pleased to host State Representative Jennifer Boylan (District 66) for a discussion and brainstorming session about soon-to-be-proposed legislation to curb the spread of invasive plants in Rhode Island. \nThe event will take place on Monday\, January 5\, at 7 pm at the Barrington Public Library. All are welcome to this free event\, regardless of where you live. \nREGISTER FOR THE EVENT \nRhode Island is one of only five states without a prohibited plant sale list\, a list that restricts the sale and distribution of invasive plants\, and the only state in New England without one. Invasive plants are a specific category of non native plant that have been shown to wreak havoc on local ecosystems by spreading exponentially and crowding out native plants species. \nThis bill would prohibit the sale of these plant species at nurseries\, garden centers and anywhere plants are sold in the state. Research has shown that 60% of invasive plants are introduced through their intentional sale and planting. Join us for this conversation and learn more about what you can do to help support this effort. \nRead about the bill.
