SUMMARY:Learning Series: Next Generation Leaders & Land Trust Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:A new generation of leaders is forming in some of the most remote corners of Barrington. Armed with clippers\, weed wrenches\, shovels\, bow saws\, trash grabbers and other human-powered tools\, they collaborate and work toward shared goals while caring for our natural open spaces. \nJoin us on Wed.\, June 4\, at 6 pm for a presentation by graduating high school seniors on the Student Stewardship Team of the Barrington Land Conservation Trust. This event\, held in partnership with the Barrington Public Library\, will take place in the Salem Family Auditorium. \nREGISTER FOR THE EVENT \nThe Land Trust will hold a brief Annual Meeting before the presentation. A reception in the Collis Family Gallery will follow the event. All are welcome. \nMore than 30 high school students between the age of 14 and 18 have participated on the Student Stewardship Team since its founding in May 2023. Working in small teams\, they help the Land Trust in variety of ways\, from physical tasks like trail maintenance and planting\, to specialized skills like website design\, photography\, film\, research and event management. \nHear first-hand from students who have been volunteering far from the view of most townspeople. Now in its third year of operation\, the Student Stewardship Team is cultivating leadership skills and civic responsibility at the grassroots level — literally. \n“Whether we were clearing trails\, removing invasive species\, or cleaning up the beach\, there was something incredibly satisfying about getting our hands dirty together\,” says senior Henry Schultz. \n“There was no competition – no pressure – and it was just us\, outside\, doing work that made a real difference. In a world where so much of our time is spent behind screens\, this kind of connection to nature and to each other feels so refreshing.” \nIn the last 12 months\, the Student Stewardship Team has contributed nearly 500 hours of volunteer time. They have worked on many properties owned by the Land Trust as well as town-owned properties including Osamequin Nature Preserve\, St. Andrews Farm\, Doug Rayner Wildlife Refuge and Veteran’s Memorial Park. \nEach of the student speakers is a recipient of the Russo Scholarship\, awarded to graduating seniors on the Student Stewardship Team who have completed more than 20 hours of service by the time they apply. The scholarships are made possible by Barrington resident and retired inventor Ronald Russo. \nThe students’ work enhances the ongoing stewardship activities of the Tuesday Trails Team\, an adult team which meets monthly to work on conservation properties\, and the adult property stewards who monitor the Land Trust’s properties monthly. \n“I started volunteering for the Student Stewardship Team at the end of my sophomore year of high school\, when the program was in its infancy\,” recalls senior Indie Lamb. \n“What I found was an amazing community which I will treasure. I have always been a proponent of preserving wild spaces. However\, it was not until I started volunteering on the Student Stewardship Team that I truly understood why it was important. These spaces provided habitat for native plant species\, wildlife and for human enjoyment. SUMMARY:Art in Nature: Meditating with the Four Directions
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Beth Adoette at the Doug Rayner Wildlife Refuge on Sunday\, June 8\, from 1 to 3:30 pm for a free Art in Nature event\, “Meditating With The Four Directions.” This workshop starts with a mindful meditation\, as we turn and consider the gifts and guidance of the four directions appearing in this special landscape. \nREGISTER FOR THE EVENT \nParticipants will consider their connection to place\, the other inhabitants\, and the people with whom they are connected\, near and far. We’ll create individual mandalas with objects from the ground to be left in the landscape. The experience will conclude with a group discussion\, reflecting on this beautiful and unique practice. \nThe workshop is open to adults ages 18 and up. Registration is limited to 15 people. The rain date is Sunday\, June 22. \nAbout the Artist \nBeth grew up in the Appalachian Mountains with hemlocks\, streams\, and chickadees in her hands. Once an editorial illustrator\, Beth has returned to her love of nature and now concentrates on illustrating\, photographing\, and writing about nature and nature mandalas. \nAfter completing her certification in eco-art therapy\, Beth began designing and facilitating a variety of public and private art wellness mandala workshops for organizations\, schools\, private groups. Beth holds a BFA in Fine Arts and has received her certification in Eco-Art Therapy through Portland State University (OR)\, and Project Nature Connect.

DESCRIPTION:Join artist Allison Wilbur for our next monthly walk and Nature Journaling session. This session will take place on Monday\, June 16\, from 10 to Noon at the Doug Rayner Wildlife Refuge. \nREGISTER FOR THE EVENT \nEach month we will explore a different Land Trust property to improve our powers of observation and keep a record of the changing seasons. \nYou’ll be invited to share ideas on what to enter into your journal and encourage each other as you explore and document the natural world. \nEach participant should bring their own journal and pens\, pencils\, watercolors or whatever supplies fit your practice. This group is focused on sharing of ideas and approaches (not artistic instruction). \nThis event is open to all ages (as long as children are accompanied by an adult). \nAbout Allison Wilbur \nAllison Wilbur is a quilt artist who focuses on the natural world and women’s empowerment. Living on the edge of one of the Barrington Land Conservation Trust properties\, she enjoys daily walks in the field and often records the passing of the seasons in her journal. DESCRIPTION:Discover one of Barrington’s natural gems\, the Hampden Meadows Greenbelt\, on Wednesday\, June 25 at 9 am. All ages are welcome. You may bring dogs on leashes. \nREGISTER FOR THE WALK \nOur walk will begin at the trailhead on Kent Street in Barrington\, across from the tennis courts. Kent Street is a short road that runs between New Meadow Road and Sowams Road.  \nWe’ll walk the main trail through the forest as far as Linden Road and return the same way. The entire walk is approximately 2 miles. \nYou may park at the tennis courts on Kent St.  Dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear. \nWe’ll keep moving at a moderate pace and be finished in about an hour. \n
