SUMMARY:Learning Series: How Healthy is Narragansett Bay?
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, Oct. 8\, at 7 pm for a presentation on the health of Narragansett Bay by Dr. Warren Prell\, Professor of Oceanography Emeritus\, Department of Earth\, Environmental and Planetary Sciences\, Brown University. \nThe presentation will take place in the Salem Family Auditorium at the Barrington Public Library\, our partner in the Land Trust Learning Series. \nREGISTER FOR THE EVENT \nFifty years ago\, Narragansett Bay was heavily polluted with excess nutrients (mostly Nitrogen) and coliform bacteria.  These conditions led to hypoxia (low oxygen)\, high chlorophyll levels\, fish kills\, and much of the upper bay closed to shell fishing.  \nToday\, the Bay is greatly improved.  The nitrogen input to the Bay have been reduced by 50%\, the area of hypoxia and excess chlorophyll has been dramatically reduced\, and the upper bay and part of the Providence River are conditionally open to shell fishing.  \nWarren will review how the Narragansett Bay estuary works\, what leads to hypoxia\, the changes that were made to reduce pollution levels\, and how the improvements to the Bay were monitored.  He will also speculate on how climate change may affect future hypoxia levels in the Bay. \nAbout Warren Prell \nDr. Warren Prell received a BA in 1966 with Honors from Hanover College and a PhD in 1974 from Columbia University. He became director of oceanographic and geologic programs for the NYC Energy Research and Development Authority before being appointed as Assistant Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at Brown in 1975. He was promoted to full professor in 1989 and was appointed to the Henry L. Doherty Chair in Oceanography in 1990. \n  \nThanks to our 2025 Land Trust Learning Series Sponsors!\n \n\nMeridian Custom Homes ~ Providence\nCharles E. Millard\, Inc. General Contractors – Bristol \nTiffany’s Salon & Spa – Barrington \nPODS Swimming – East Providence \nRosemary’s School of Dance – Warren\, Bristol\, Rehoboth \nJaffe Orthodontics – Barrington & Portsmouth

SUMMARY:Guided Walk: St. Andrews Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, October 18\, at 9:30 am for a guided walk at St. Andrews Farm. This 28-acre expanse of field\, forest and athletic fields off Middle Highway in Barrington\, RI is owned by the Town and managed by the St. Andrews Farm Management Committee\, which is composed of Land Trust members\, abutters\, and several Town officials. \nThe terrain is gentle and the property is open to the public year-round\, dawn to dusk. The guided walk will last about an hour. All ages are welcome. \nREGISTER FOR THE WALK \nThe walk will be led by Property Steward Ginger Brown. Ginger is a former president of the Land Trust and author of Dragonflies and Damselflies of Rhode Island. Ginger has more than 30 years of experience as a professional biologist and has been a staff member at The Nature Conservancy of Rhode Island\, Rhode Island Natural History Survey\, and the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History. \nThe property was operated by St. Andrews School as a working farm from the 1890s until the 1960s. In 2000\, the McAdams Charitable Foundation\, through the generosity of Norman (“Sandy”) and Dorothy (“Dotty”) McCulloch\, purchased the property from St. Andrews School and donated it to the Town of Barrington. \nGinger Brown with visitors to St. Andrews Farm \nThis generous gift ensured that the property would be preserved and maintained as open recreational space for the benefit of the public. Part of the property was set aside for the construction of an athletic field. The remaining acres of rolling grassland and trees bounded by upland and wetland forests are preserved as conservation land. \nConsistent with the McCullochs’ goals for the property\, the Town and the Land Trust have worked together to restore the property to its original condition and encourage greater public use for walking\, birding and educational purposes. \n  \n\n\n\nThe McCulloch Fields contain a mix of plant communities ranging from field grasses and wildflowers interspersed with islands of shrubs and trees to a woodland buffer around the periphery. Of particular note are a rare Whorled milkweed (Asclepias verticullata) and a champion white oak tree with a trunk exceeding 12 feet in diameter. The fields provide a habitat for a wide variety of mammals\, birds\, amphibians\, reptiles and insects. Their proximity to the coastal flyway makes it a potentially important stop-over for migratory birds. \nFor more information about the Barrington Land Conservation Trust\, please email Executive Director Cindy Elder.

SUMMARY:Day After Thanksgiving Walk - Johannis Farm Wildlife Preserve
DESCRIPTION: \nOn Friday Nov. 28\, between 11 am and 1 pm\, Land Trust volunteers will be stationed at waypoints to assist visitors on a self-guided walk through the Johannis Farm Wildlife Preserve\, a 32-acre expanse of field\, forest and wetland between Sowams Road and the Palmer River.\n \nREGISTER FOR THE EVENT\n \nDogs are not allowed because of the birds and animals that make this wildlife preserve their home. You may arrive anytime between 11 am and 1 pm. Johannis Farm Wildlife Preserve is located on Sowams Road\, 0.7 miles north of Sowams Elementary School. The walk takes approximately one hour over wet and moderate terrain. Wear boots! Severe weather cancels the event. Parking is available on site.\n\nBe aware that the primary bridge which connected the two sides of the property is under construction but may not be installed by this date. You will be able to walk both sides of the property\, but you won’t be able to walk it as a loop trail.  \nJohannis Farm Wildlife Preserve was acquired by the Land Trust in 1991 through a combination of Rhode Island and Barrington Open Space bonds and charitable donations to the Barrington Land Conservation Trust. Due to the sensitive native plants and animals on the property\, it is not generally open to the public. The Land Trust hosts several guided walks each year to enable the public to experience the property\, which has been preserved as a wilderness reserve in perpetuity.

SUMMARY:Guided Walk: Doug Rayner Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:Experience winter in the vast open space of the Doug Rayner Wildlife Refuge. Join our free guided walk on Sunday\, Dec. 21\, at 1 pm. Visiting family members are welcome! \nREGISTER FOR THE WALK \nThe walk will be led by Peter McCalmont\, Chairman of the Doug Rayner Wildlife Refuge Management Committee\, and Charlie Brown\, retired wildlife biologist with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management\, Co-Chair of the Management Committee and Co-Manager of the Refuge.  \nThe Refuge is located on Nockum Hill on a peninsula extending into the Barrington River and Hundred Acre Cove estuary. Owned by the Town of Barrington\, the Refuge’s public hiking trails traverse 82 acres of field\, forest and shoreline. \nHistory of Nockum Hill \nNockum Hill has figured prominently in Barrington’s history. Once home to the Pokanoket people\, it is the site of the first Baptist meetinghouse in the New World. Legend has it that the first shots of King Philip’s War were fired nearby. \nThe town acquired the land in the 1960s and designated it as a wildlife refuge in 1994. The Barrington Land Conservation Trust was granted a conservation easement on the property in 2005 to ensure the property remains protected in perpetuity. This sensitive land is managed by the Doug Rayner Management Committee in collaboration with the Land Trust. \nIn 2000\, the Refuge was named after ardent naturalist Doug Rayner\, a member of the Barrington Conservation Commission and a board member of the Barrington Land Conservation Trust. Doug was instrumental in protecting the marshes and upland buffers of the Palmer and Barrington Rivers\, Nockum Hill and Hundred Acre Cove\, and was active in protecting endangered species and their habitats. \nLong recognized as a property of great natural resource value because of its coastal wetland and habitat\, it includes extensive salt marsh\, shrub-dominated fields\, deciduous forest and farmland. It provides habitat for a wide variety of animals which make their home in the diverse ecosystem of the Refuge and several special interest bird species such as clapper rail\, seaside sparrow and marsh wren. \nThe Barrington Land Conservation Trust has preserved approximately 300 acres of open space in perpetuity for the benefit of the public.

SUMMARY:Discussion: Invasive Plant Species Legislation
DESCRIPTION:Burning Bush invading a New England woodland understory. Despite the ecological harm being caused by this plant\, it is still commonly sold and planted across RI. \nThe Barrington Pollinator Pathway\, an initiative of the Barrington Land Conservation Trust\, is pleased to host State Representative Jennifer Boylan (District 66) for a discussion and brainstorming session about soon-to-be-proposed legislation to curb the spread of invasive plants in Rhode Island. \nThe event will take place on Monday\, January 5\, at 7 pm at the Barrington Public Library. All are welcome to this free event\, regardless of where you live. \nREGISTER FOR THE EVENT \nRhode Island is one of only five states without a prohibited plant sale list\, a list that restricts the sale and distribution of invasive plants\, and the only state in New England without one. Invasive plants are a specific category of non native plant that have been shown to wreak havoc on local ecosystems by spreading exponentially and crowding out native plants species. \nThis bill would prohibit the sale of these plant species at nurseries\, garden centers and anywhere plants are sold in the state. Research has shown that 60% of invasive plants are introduced through their intentional sale and planting. Join us for this conversation and learn more about what you can do to help support this effort. \nRead about the bill.

SUMMARY:Learning Series: Letters to Boulders
DESCRIPTION:Our first event in the 2026 Learning Series features award-winning poet Karen Donovan. She’ll read from her new book\, Letters to Boulders\, and discuss her unique blend of art and science on Monday\, March 9\, at 7 pm. The event will take place in the Salem Family Auditorium at the Barrington Public Library. We are grateful to the Library for partnering with us on the Learning Series. \nREGISTER FOR THE EVENT \nLetters to Boulders has been called “a poetic meditation on the mutable qualities of the earth.” A collection of short prose written in response to a curation of rocks\, the book features full-color photographs of rocks paired with prose pieces that range in style from memoir to manifesto. \nEach piece of writing is titled by a term from the geosciences. Letters to Boulders adopts the look of a field guide but delivers something more creative\, transforming basic geological concepts and motifs through metaphor and storytelling. \nThe rocks are the stars here. Drawn from a tiny East Bay beach\, they are a mix of breeds – granite\, quartz\, gneiss\, schist\, sandstone\, mudstone\, conglomerate – as are all the writerly forms employed: narrative\, argument\, speculation\, allegory\, reportage\, confession\, list\, prose poem\, ode. Filled with “grit and fizz and nerve\,” Letters to Boulders speaks about life on earth\, past and present\, a story that is essentially about timescale. We may indeed be haunted by brevity\, it says\, but there is solace in the idea of deep time and the reliable heft of rocks collected by hand. \nAbout Karen Donovan \nKaren Donovan is a prizewinning poet and the author of Letters to Boulders\, a book of prose and photographs published by Wet Cement Press in 2025. Her other books of poetry and prose are Monad+Monadnock\, Planet Parable\, Aard-vark to Axolotl\, Your Enzymes Are Calling the Ancients\, and Fugitive Red. She lives in Riverside. \n  \nThanks to our 2026 Learning Series Sponsors!\n \n \n  \n \nCharles E. SUMMARY:Art in Nature: Working in Micros ~ Keep it Short\, Keep it Sweet
DESCRIPTION:The Art in Nature Series is made possible by the Ronald D. Russo Fund and the Barrington Public Library. All programs are free and open to the public. \nBrevity is power! Join award-winning local poet Karen Donovan for a workshop in writing micro prose\, a free event offered through our Art in Nature series. Donovan’s newest book\, Letters to Boulders\, was inspired by rocks collected at local beaches. \nThe event will take place on Monday\, March 23\, at 6:30 pm in the Collis Gallery at the Barrington Public Library. Please bring paper or a notebook\, a writing instrument and your favorite stone\, pinecone\, seashell\, leaf\, feather\, seed pod or any other natural object to use as a center for storytelling. \nREGISTER FOR THE EVENT \nMicros are very short written pieces that can take the form of stories\, memoirs\, essays\, prose poetry\, journal entries\, fairy tales\, vignettes\, and other types of creative expression. Most micros are usually around 300 words long but are often even briefer. They feature strong sentences\, irresistible beginnings and striking endings\, an arresting tone\, and lots of sensory detail. \nMicros can be about anything and are great conveyors of a writer’s idiosyncratic voice – sometimes the quirkier\, the better. Just like an elevator pitch\, micros quickly catch and keep a reader’s attention and make an impact. \nIn this workshop\, you’ll write in response to a variety of prompts that will get your thoughts flowing. We’ll use topic suggestions\, story starters\, images\, and natural objects that will unlock your imagination and encourage ideas. At the end of the workshop\, you’ll be invited to read your draft out loud to the group if you wish to share it. This is an AI-free zone\, so you’ll have the pleasure of your own inventions\, and enjoy what everyone else creates\, too. \nLetters to Boulders will be available for sale at the workshop. \nAbout Karen Donovan \nKaren Donovan is a prizewinning poet and the author of Letters to Boulders\, a book of prose and photographs published by Wet Cement Press in 2025.
