Join us for a community screening of the new documentary by Jason Jaacks\, Between Moon Tides\, followed by a discussion featuring the co-directors of the Saltmarsh Sparrow Research Initiative\, Steve Reinert\, Jim O’Neill and Deirdre Robinson\, along with Research Assistant Joel Eckerson. \nThe Saltmarsh Sparrow has often been referred to as the “canary in the coal mine” for rising sea levels due to global warming. It has successfully built nests only an inch above the ground for thousands of years. \nDependent upon healthy salt marshes on the East Coast of the US\, the Saltmarsh Sparrow’s population has diminished by 75% since the 1990s. It lives nowhere else in the world and could become extinct by mid-century due to flooding\, depredation and habitat loss. \n \nBetween Moon Tides: The Documentary \nBetween Moon Tides follows an intergenerational group of citizen scientists in coastal New England as they attempt to save the Saltmarsh Sparrow from extinction — one nest at a time. Against the backdrop of rising sea levels\, three retirees and a young intern forge deep bonds while scouring the saltmarsh\, banding birds and witnessing firsthand the devastating effects of climate change. \nThrough stunning visuals and intimate storytelling\, the film reveals how a disappearing bird serves as both a warning and a call to action. Yet\, at its heart\, Between Moon Tides is a love story—about nature\, mentorship and the hope that comes from refusing to give up\, even in the face of impossible odds. \nAbout Jason Jaacks \nJason Jaacks is a filmmaker and photographer whose work explores the natural world and our place in it through the lens of science\, natural history\, and exploration. This group is focused on sharing of ideas and approaches (not artistic instruction). \nThis event is open to all ages (as long as children are accompanied by an adult). \nIn the event of rain\, we will meet at the Residential Properties room on the second floor of the Barrington Public Library. Cindy Elder\, Executive Director of the Land Trust\, will share a slide show of Johannis Farm Wildlife Preserve. DESCRIPTION:Pete McCalmont \nVisit the Doug Rayner Wildlife Refuge on Thursday\, May 29\, at 9 am and enjoy a guided walk at the height of springtime. The walk is limited in size to ensure the best possible experience for participants. \nREGISTER FOR THE WALK \nThe walk will be led by Peter McCalmont\, Chairman of the Doug Rayner Wildlife Refuge Management Committee\, and Charlie Brown\, retired wildlife biologist with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management\, Co-Chair of the Management Committee and Co-Manager of the Refuge.  \nThe Refuge is located on Nockum Hill on a peninsula extending into the Barrington River and Hundred Acre Cove estuary. Owned by the Town of Barrington\, the Refuge’s public hiking trails traverse 82 acres of field\, forest and shoreline. \nHistory of Nockum Hill \nNockum Hill has figured prominently in Barrington’s history. Once home to the Pokanoket people\, it is the site of the first Baptist meetinghouse in the New World. Legend has it that the first shots of King Philip’s War were fired nearby. \nThe town acquired the land in the 1960s and designated it as a wildlife refuge in 1994. The Barrington Land Conservation Trust was granted a conservation easement on the property in 2005 to ensure the property remains protected in perpetuity. This sensitive land is managed by the Doug Rayner Management Committee in collaboration with the Land Trust. \nIn 2000\, the Refuge was named after ardent naturalist Doug Rayner\, a member of the Barrington Conservation Commission and a board member of the Barrington Land Conservation Trust. Doug was instrumental in protecting the marshes and upland buffers of the Palmer and Barrington Rivers\, Nockum Hill and Hundred Acre Cove\, and was active in protecting endangered species and their habitats. \nLong recognized as a property of great natural resource value because of its coastal wetland and habitat\, it includes extensive salt marsh\, shrub-dominated fields\, deciduous forest and farmland. It provides habitat for a wide variety of animals which make their home in the diverse ecosystem of the Refuge and several special interest bird species such as clapper rail\, seaside sparrow and marsh wren. \nThe Barrington Land Conservation Trust has preserved approximately 300 acres of open space in perpetuity for the benefit of the public.

SUMMARY:Learning Series: Next Generation Leaders & Land Trust Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:A new generation of leaders is forming in some of the most remote corners of Barrington. Armed with clippers\, weed wrenches\, shovels\, bow saws\, trash grabbers and other human-powered tools\, they collaborate and work toward shared goals while caring for our natural open spaces. \nJoin us on Wed.\, June 4\, at 6 pm for a presentation by graduating high school seniors on the Student Stewardship Team of the Barrington Land Conservation Trust. This event\, held in partnership with the Barrington Public Library\, will take place in the Salem Family Auditorium. \nREGISTER FOR THE EVENT \nThe Land Trust will hold a brief Annual Meeting before the presentation. A reception in the Collis Family Gallery will follow the event. All are welcome. \nMore than 30 high school students between the age of 14 and 18 have participated on the Student Stewardship Team since its founding in May 2023. Working in small teams\, they help the Land Trust in variety of ways\, from physical tasks like trail maintenance and planting\, to specialized skills like website design\, photography\, film\, research and event management. \nHear first-hand from students who have been volunteering far from the view of most townspeople. Now in its third year of operation\, the Student Stewardship Team is cultivating leadership skills and civic responsibility at the grassroots level — literally. \n“Whether we were clearing trails\, removing invasive species\, or cleaning up the beach\, there was something incredibly satisfying about getting our hands dirty together\,” says senior Henry Schultz. \n“There was no competition – no pressure – and it was just us\, outside\, doing work that made a real difference. In a world where so much of our time is spent behind screens\, this kind of connection to nature and to each other feels so refreshing.” \nIn the last 12 months\, the Student Stewardship Team has contributed nearly 500 hours of volunteer time. They have worked on many properties owned by the Land Trust as well as town-owned properties including Osamequin Nature Preserve\, St. Andrews Farm\, Doug Rayner Wildlife Refuge and Veteran’s Memorial Park. \nEach of the student speakers is a recipient of the Russo Scholarship\, awarded to graduating seniors on the Student Stewardship Team who have completed more than 20 hours of service by the time they apply. The scholarships are made possible by Barrington resident and retired inventor Ronald Russo. \nThe students’ work enhances the ongoing stewardship activities of the Tuesday Trails Team\, an adult team which meets monthly to work on conservation properties\, and the adult property stewards who monitor the Land Trust’s properties monthly. \n“I started volunteering for the Student Stewardship Team at the end of my sophomore year of high school\, when the program was in its infancy\,” recalls senior Indie Lamb. \n“What I found was an amazing community which I will treasure. I have always been a proponent of preserving wild spaces. However\, it was not until I started volunteering on the Student Stewardship Team that I truly understood why it was important. These spaces provided habitat for native plant species\, wildlife and for human enjoyment. SUMMARY:Art in Nature: Meditating with the Four Directions
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Beth Adoette at the Doug Rayner Wildlife Refuge on Sunday\, June 8\, from 1 to 3:30 pm for a free Art in Nature event\, “Meditating With The Four Directions.” This workshop starts with a mindful meditation\, as we turn and consider the gifts and guidance of the four directions appearing in this special landscape. \nREGISTER FOR THE EVENT \nParticipants will consider their connection to place\, the other inhabitants\, and the people with whom they are connected\, near and far. We’ll create individual mandalas with objects from the ground to be left in the landscape. The experience will conclude with a group discussion\, reflecting on this beautiful and unique practice. \nThe workshop is open to adults ages 18 and up. Registration is limited to 15 people. The rain date is Sunday\, June 22. \nAbout the Artist \nBeth grew up in the Appalachian Mountains with hemlocks\, streams\, and chickadees in her hands. Once an editorial illustrator\, Beth has returned to her love of nature and now concentrates on illustrating\, photographing\, and writing about nature and nature mandalas. \nAfter completing her certification in eco-art therapy\, Beth began designing and facilitating a variety of public and private art wellness mandala workshops for organizations\, schools\, private groups. Beth holds a BFA in Fine Arts and has received her certification in Eco-Art Therapy through Portland State University (OR)\, and Project Nature Connect.

SUMMARY:Guided Walk ~ PIC-WIL Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free guided walk to PIC-WIL Nature Preserve\, a 24-acre preserve of forest\, field\, salt marsh and coastal dunes on the east shore of the Providence River in Barrington. For this summer walk\, a path has been mowed through the high grasses to reduce the risk of exposure to ticks and poison ivy. \nThe terrain is gentle but may be wet in places. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear.  \nThe walk will last about an hour. All ages are welcome. Advance registration is required. Parking is available on Tallwood Drive\, off Washington Road in Barrington. The trailhead is directly across from the intersection of Tallwood Drive and Washington Road. \nREGISTER FOR THE WALK \n \nOnce home to a bottling facility owned by Deep Rock Bottling Company\, the property was donated to the Nature Conservancy by Catherine Picerelli in December of 1986 and deeded to the Barrington Land Conservation Trust in 1987\, to be preserved in perpetuity as a nature preserve. \nThe donation was made in memory of the families of Peter J. Picerelli and Clifford M. Wilson: thus the name “PIC-WIL.”  \nThe forest includes a wide variety of deciduous trees. The property is home to deer\, coyote\, fox\, weasels\, squirrels\, chipmunks and rabbits. \nPurple Martins nest here in late spring and summer. Common birds of the marsh and tidal creeks include Mallards\, American Black Ducks\, Snowy and Great Egrets\, Green-backed Herons\, Great Blue Herons\, and Osprey. Sharp-tailed Sparrows\, Belted Kingfishers and various shorebirds are other likely visitors of the wetland. \nNesting birds of the forest and its shrub border include Song Sparrow\, Carolina Wren\, Blue Jay\, Flicker\, Cardinal\, Goldfinch\, Robin\, Red-eyed Vireo\, Mockingbird\, Catbird\, Brown Thrasher and others. \nThree plants at PIC-WIL have “special interest” status in the state of Rhode Island: Creeping Spikerush (Eleocharis rostellata)\, Maritime Seablite (Suaeda maritima) and Robust Bulrush (Scirpus robustus).

SUMMARY:Guided Walk: Johannis Farm Wildlife Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Experience one of Barrington’s rarely seen wilderness areas with the Barrington Land Conservation Trust. \nOn Saturday\, Aug. 9\, at 5 9 am\, join a guided walk through the Johannis Farm Wildlife Preserve\, a 32-acre expanse of field\, forest and wetland between Sowams Road and the Palmer River. The walk will be led by Property Steward Bill Kirkpatrick. \nREGISTER FOR THE EVENT \nDogs are not allowed because of the birds and animals that make this wildlife preserve their home.  \nJohannis Farm Wildlife Preserve is located on Sowams Road\, 0.7 miles north of Sowams Elementary School. \nThe walk takes approximately one and a half hours over moderate terrain\, which may be wet in places. We recommend you wear lightweight long pants\, sturdy shoes and socks\, and a lightweight long-sleeved shirt to protect against mosquitos and ticks. Bug spray will be available.  Parking is available on site. \nBe aware that the primary bridge which connected the two sides of the property was washed out during a king high tide storm. You will be able to walk both sides of the property\, but you won’t be able to walk it as a loop trail. A new bridge is in the works. \nJohannis Farm Wildlife Preserve was acquired by the Land Trust in 1991 through a combination of Rhode Island and Barrington Open Space bonds and charitable donations to the Barrington Land Conservation Trust. Due to the sensitive native plants and animals on the property\, it is not generally open to the public. The Land Trust hosts several guided walks each year to enable the public to experience the property\, which has been preserved as a wilderness reserve in perpetuity.
